Your Phone Is Not an Archive

You recorded it. Will anyone be able to find it in ten years?

Say you have done the hard part. You recorded your mother, and there are dozens of voice notes on your phone.

Good. Now an unromantic question: will they still be there in ten years?

Digital things disappear differently from paper

Paper yellows and goes brittle. You can watch it age. Digital files do not age. They vanish all at once.

A phone gets replaced without a full backup. A cloud password is lost. A subscription lapses and the storage is cleared. A drive fails. A WhatsApp migration drops a chat. An account cannot be opened after the person dies.

None of that is hypothetical, it is completely routine. A book printed on acid-free paper and sewn at the spine opens fine in a hundred years.

And a second problem nobody mentions: findability

Even if the files survive, your phone holds thousands of them, and thirty of them are your mother, filed as AUD-20260603-WA0007.

You are not going to spend a Saturday afternoon going back through those thirty. Your children certainly are not.

A record nobody ever reopens is, in practice, close to no record at all. That is what actually kills most family recordings. Not corruption. Nobody can find them.

"The point of a recording is that someone presses play again."

The value of a record is not created at the moment of recording. It is created thirty years later, if someone can still get to it.

So we pin the voice back onto paper

The books we make join the two halves back together. Paper does not care about phone upgrades or expired subscriptions, and a book on the coffee table gets picked up.

Every line they said has a QR code beside it that plays their voice, with the original audio kept safely on our side rather than depending on your handset.

It gets opened because it is openable. The voice survives because it is still reachable.

Three things worth doing today

One. Copy every recording of an elderly relative off your phone to a second place: a computer, an external drive, another cloud account. One copy is not a backup.

Two. Put them in a folder with a name a human being would understand, like Mum 2026. Finding them later depends on the name, not on your memory.

Three. Write one line saying what each one is about. "3 June, the flat she grew up in" is enough. That line is the reason someone will ever open it again.

Let's talk. No decision needed today.
