What Happens After You Record? How a Voice Note Becomes a Book

This is where most people get stuck: they recorded it, and then nothing.

Plenty of people ask the questions, record the answers, and stop there. Twenty voice notes on a phone and no idea what to do with them.

This is the second half.

One. They never write a single word

What older people dread is not talking, it is being asked to write. So the whole thing is built so that talking is all they do.

One question at a time, answered whenever they feel like it, in exactly the way they already send you voice notes. Nothing to install, nothing to learn, nobody to meet.

Two. We shape what they said, in the way they said it

This is the step that matters most, and where we differ most from everyone else: we do not convert their spoken Cantonese into formal written Chinese.

If she says get through one day and that is one day gained, that is what the page says. It does not become a polished literary sentence, because the moment it does, it stops being her.

What we do is remove repetition and put the order right so each chapter reads properly. Every sentence in it is still the one that came out of her mouth.

Three. The key lines get a QR code

The few lines that carry each chapter are set large, with a QR code printed beside them.

Scan it and you hear her say that line, from the original recording. That is the point of the whole book.

"He said to me, 'There's a flat now. Will you marry me?'"

In the book that is a full page. Scan the code beside it and you hear her tell you what happened that day.

Four. It gets printed as a real book

Sewn binding, acid-free paper, pigment ink, cloth hardcover with foil, and a photograph mounted on the front. That specification is the same on every book and is never reduced to hit a lower price.

From the point the recordings are complete, it is usually three to four weeks.

Five. You see the whole thing before it prints

You get a full proof of the finished book, every page, before anything goes to the printer. If it is not good enough, you pay nothing and we do not print it.

That is not a slogan, it is a fixed step in the process, because this is not the kind of thing you can compensate someone for getting wrong.
