Photobook
Memory Book vs Photo Book: Which One Keeps the Person?
One keeps the face. The other keeps the person.
Everyone in Hong Kong knows the photobook: pick a template, upload the photos, print. For a trip, a birthday, a graduation, it is quick and cheap, and we are not here to talk you out of one.
But if what you want to keep is not a set of moments but a person, a photo book cannot do it.
A photo book keeps the face. A memory book keeps the story
A photobook answers "where did we go that day". It cannot answer "who was she". What is in the photos, you already know: her face, what she wore. What you do not know is exactly what photos never carry: the name of her home village, her first wage, how she met your father.
The English term for the other kind of book is a memory book, or a life story book: the person's own told story is the subject, and the photographs support it. In Chinese, the closest words are 回憶錄 or 人生故事書.
And one thing neither book keeps
The voice. A photobook is silent, and so is an ordinary memoir. That is why every quoted line in our books carries a QR code that plays the original recording. We call it a 留聲書, a book that keeps the voice.
So which one, and when?
To remember an event or a trip: a photo book, every time. To keep a whole person, in their own voice: that is the work we do.
The two do not compete. Many families have both. One is an album. The other is a person.
Let's talk. No decision needed today.
