When They Won't Talk About the Hardest Years

Silence does not always need breaking. It can still be kept.

Most families have a period that cannot be discussed. The years of fleeing, the relative who never made it down, a divorce, a child who died young, a stretch of poverty nobody wants named.

Go anywhere near it and the subject changes, or you get a flat what is the point of talking about that, and nothing after.

First: not talking is a choice, not a malfunction

Some things stay unsaid because saying them hurts, and they have spent fifty years putting that where it belongs. Asking is asking them to take it apart again.

They are allowed to decline. A family record is not a deposition. If making a book requires forcing an old person back through the worst thing that happened to them, the book is not worth making.

But do not let one closed door close all of them

Families often hit that wall once and stop entirely, concluding that he will not talk about anything. Usually there is exactly one thing he will not talk about, not everything.

Go around it. Ask about either side. Where were you living then? Who was good to you in that period? How did you get through it?

You will often find they will answer how they got through it even while refusing what happened. And how they got through it is frequently the part your children will actually need.

"It was the fault of two people, not of one. And of this matter, that is as far as I will speak."

We printed that exactly as she said it, including the second half. She drew a line, and the line is part of the story.

Recording the silence is a legitimate thing to do

If they say clearly that they do not want to discuss something, you can write that down: this is something she chose not to speak about.

Two things come from that. A grandchild will not assume it was simply forgotten, and will see that it existed and was respected. And when the elder reads the book, they will see you did not push.

Sometimes it loosens later

Plenty of people refuse the first time and come back to it in the third or fourth month, once they can see this is not a passing enthusiasm and that what they say is being kept carefully.

Which is why the slow version gets more, not less: one question a week, no chasing, no pressure. Trust gets built by the recording itself.

Let's talk. No decision needed today.
