What People Miss Most After Someone Dies

The answers are remarkably consistent, and almost nobody guesses right.

Talk to people who have buried a parent and the same answers keep coming back.

They do not say they wish they could see the birthday photographs again. They say they cannot remember exactly how she said their name.

What people miss is the everyday register

Her voice calling you to dinner from the kitchen. The way she answered the phone. The breath she took halfway through laughing. The change in pitch when she was telling you off.

These are so mundane you never notice them. And after someone dies they are the first thing to fade, and they fade quickly.

You do not need the research on memory decay to know this. Many people describe the same thing two or three years on: the sharpest moment is not thinking about the person, it is realising they can no longer hear them.

"I have thousands of photos of her, and less than ten seconds of her voice."

Said by a friend who had just lost her mother. She was not short of records. She had recorded the wrong thing.

We photograph far too much and record almost nothing

The average person takes thousands of photographs a year, plenty of them with a parent in the frame. Their voice? Maybe a handful of WhatsApp notes saying have you eaten and take an umbrella.

That is nobody's fault. A photograph takes one press. Recording someone requires them to speak, to have something to say, and to have a reason.

So give it a reason. Do not think of it as recording their voice. Think of it as asking them a question. A question produces an answer, and an answer produces the recording by itself.

If your family has just lost someone

This is not a piece telling you to go and do something today.

But if there are other elders still here, people often see very clearly at exactly this moment that the next one cannot wait. That clarity passes, usually within a couple of months. While it is here, ask one question.

One question, one voice note. It genuinely does not need to be more than that.

Let's talk. No decision needed today.
