Memoir, Autobiography, Memorial Album: What Is the Difference?
Pick the wrong format and the whole project fails quietly.
Search for how to make a book about your parents and you get a mess: ghostwritten autobiographies, memoir services, memorial albums, photo books, oral history projects. Prices run from a few hundred dollars to six figures.
These are four genuinely different products. Once you can tell them apart, the choice is easy.
One. The ghostwritten autobiography (from HK$10,000)
A writer interviews your parent and produces a book in the writer's prose. Well structured, properly written, often published with an ISBN.
Right for: someone with a public profile who wants a formal work on the record.
Worth knowing: what comes out is the writer's voice, not your parent's. A common reaction on delivery is that it reads beautifully and does not sound like them.
Two. The photo book or memorial album (a few hundred to two thousand)
Old photographs laid out well and printed. This is what most consumer platforms make.
Right for: families with a lot of photographs who want a handsome object in the house.
Worth knowing: an album keeps faces, not events. Two generations on, nobody can name the people in it.
Three. Oral history (not usually sold to individuals)
What universities and museums do: recorded interviews, transcribed word for word, archived. Academically the most complete.
Worth knowing: these archives are not built to be read by a family. Nobody reads a thirty-thousand-word transcript on the sofa.
Four. A voice book, which is what we make
Your family member talks, we shape it into a book, keeping their own phrasing and their own words rather than translating it into formal written Chinese. Every line they said has a QR code beside it that plays them saying it.
"For these three children alone, this life has already been worth it."
Tidied by a ghostwriter, that becomes something like "my life was made complete by my children." Roughly the same meaning. No longer her speaking.
Right for: families who want a grandchild to still hear the voice and the turns of phrase decades from now.
One question settles it
Ask yourself what you want your grandchild to encounter when they pick this up in thirty years.
If the answer is beautiful photographs, buy a photo book. If it is a well-written volume, hire a ghostwriter. If it is her voice and the particular way she said things, you want the fourth kind.
Let's talk. No decision needed today.
