One in Four Hong Kongers Is Now Over 65
That number is not news. It is your family's timetable.
The Census and Statistics Department numbers are blunt. In 1995 Hong Kong had 600,000 people aged 65 and over, ten per cent of the population. By 2025 that was 1.79 million, or twenty-five per cent.
Over the same period the median age of the city rose from 33.8 to 49.4.
These figures are usually used to discuss policy. They are describing your family.
Population ageing is normally followed by care home places, healthcare spending, the shrinking workforce. Those are real problems.
But the same figure read differently says something else entirely. A quarter of Hong Kong is elderly, which means most Hong Kong families have one at home right now. And every one of them is holding something of which no copy exists.
Long life is good news, and a number that makes people relax
Hong Kong life expectancy is among the highest in the world: 82.7 for men and 88.2 for women in 2024. C&SD projects both will rise further by 2046, when 36 per cent of the population is expected to be 65 or over.
Which is exactly why people feel no urgency. But living a long time is not the same as remembering well throughout, or having the energy to talk for an hour. How long someone lives and how long they can still tell you things are two different windows.
And a set of figures that gets far less attention
The 2024 Thematic Household Survey found that 14.1 per cent of people aged 65 and over had felt lonely in the week before they were interviewed.
About 188,500 elderly Hong Kongers live alone, roughly 13 per cent of the 65-plus population. Nearly 400,000 more live with only their spouse.
The South China Morning Post has also reported on research finding that social isolation among people 65 and over rose from 41.2 per cent in 2017-18 to 53 per cent in 2023-24.
"I'm playing a hand, who has time to think about you?"
A grandmother answering her son when he asked whether she missed them. You know that kind of deflection. The real answer underneath it only comes out if someone asks.
A question is a reason to call
This is why the whole thing is built around one question a week rather than one long recording session.
A question is a reason to phone. They answer with a voice note, you listen, you reply. The next week it happens again. Over six months that is twenty-odd conversations with actual content in them, instead of have you eaten and take an umbrella.
The book is the end result. But the six months in the middle are already the point.
Let's talk. No decision needed today.
