The Fastest-Ageing Place on Earth Is Right Here

Not just Hong Kong. Taiwan, Japan and Korea are crossing the same line inside the same decade.

In January 2026 Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior confirmed that of a population of 23.3 million, 4.67 million are aged 65 or over: 20.06 per cent. By the WHO definition, Taiwan is now a super-aged society.

The definition is simple. Seven per cent aged 65 and over makes an ageing society, fourteen per cent an aged society, twenty per cent a super-aged one.

The striking part is not the number, it is the speed

Taiwan only passed fourteen per cent in 2018, and passed twenty in 2026. Seven years.

The same stretch took Japan eleven years, Italy nineteen, and Germany thirty-six. South Korea took roughly eight, Singapore about seven.

Which means the shift Europe absorbed over two generations is happening here inside one. There is no buffer period and no time to adapt gradually.

And it is happening across the region at once

Japan has been super-aged since 2013. South Korea crossed in 2025. Taiwan in 2026. Hong Kong reached twenty-five per cent in 2025.

So these places are not only old, they simultaneously hold a very large cohort of people in their eighties and nineties who lived through postwar reconstruction and mass migration.

They are the first-hand witnesses to modern Asian history. And the overwhelming majority of them have never been interviewed or recorded.

"However hard it is once we get to Hong Kong, at least we won't starve."

That is the Hong Kong version. Taiwan, Japan and Korea each have their own. All said by the same generation, and almost none of it written down.
