How Do Hong Kong Families Actually Pass Values Down?

Nobody sits you down and teaches you. You learn it by watching adults.

Hong Kong families talk constantly about upbringing. Ask someone to state what their family's values actually are and most people cannot.

That is because nobody ever taught it directly. You picked it up in daily life: watching your mother be careful with money, watching your father leave for work without complaint, watching how the household treated relatives. That is how you learned the rules of that house.

Which is why values travel in stories, not in principles

Your mother telling you not to waste money does not land. Your mother telling you what she earned a month at twenty, how she would walk the length of a street to save a dollar, how poor it actually got, lands permanently.

That is what stories do. Stories have a scene attached. Principles do not. A principle becomes a parental catchphrase within one generation. A story still stands up three generations later.

"Even if I had a dollar, I wouldn't waste it. I have known hardship. I would rather go without."

Compress that into the word "thrift" and the entire thing is gone.

And the transmission line is breaking faster now

Three generations used to live together and a child saw their grandmother conduct herself daily. Now it is three people in a flat, grandmother once a week, two hours over dim sum, talking about exams and the weather.

Add emigration. Many families are now spread across two or three places, with children growing up abroad and seeing a grandparent once a year. Under those conditions the learn-by-watching mechanism has effectively stopped.

So this generation has to do deliberately what previous ones never had to: turn something that travelled by proximity into something that is actually kept.

How to ask so that values come out

Do not ask what matters most in life. It is too large and you will get a platitude.

Ask about experience instead. What was the hardest stretch you went through? Who helped you then? What decision do you most regret? What do you most hope we will not repeat?

Answering those, the values arrive by themselves, attached to the events that formed them rather than reduced to a slogan.

These are the questions we build the books around, because what a grandchild will need is not the fact that the family was careful with money. It is their great-grandmother explaining why.

Let's talk. No decision needed today.
