Chung Yeung Is Not Only Grave-Sweeping. There Is Also the Climb.
Asking someone about their past across a table is awkward. Asking while walking side by side is a different thing entirely.
The Chung Yeung Festival falls on Sunday 18 October in 2026. Because it lands on a Sunday, the public holiday moves to Monday 19 October, so this year it comes with a three-day weekend.
For most Hong Kong families Chung Yeung means grave-sweeping. Buy the offerings, go up, clean the stone, pay respects, come down. Then everyone disperses.
But that is only half of what the day is.
The climb
Chung Yeung is also called the climbing festival. The tradition is that on the ninth day of the ninth month the family walks up to high ground and looks at the autumn.
That half suits Hong Kong unusually well, because the city is full of hills and a lot of them are easy. The Peak, Lion Rock, Kowloon Peak, Castle Peak, Tai Mo Shan. There is one that matches whatever your oldest relative can manage.
The point is not how high you get, and it is not the photograph at the top. The point is the two hours of walking in the middle.
Why walking is the best conversation of the year
Sitting across a table, looking straight at someone, and asking them about their past is an awkward act. Walking beside them and asking exactly the same question is not the same act at all.
There is no eye contact. There is the rhythm of your feet. And there are gaps, because saying nothing for a minute is not strange when you are both walking.
Most people who have heard their parents talk about the past heard it while walking, or in a car, or standing at a sink washing up together. Almost nobody heard it because someone sat down and said tell me about your life.
Which makes the Chung Yeung climb less of a side activity than it looks. It is the best-designed conversation of the year, and we have been treating it as a hike.
Chrysanthemum, cake, dogwood
The other customs are looking at chrysanthemums, drinking chrysanthemum wine, eating Chung Yeung cake and wearing dogwood.
Not many people in Hong Kong keep these seriously any more. But buying a couple of pieces of the cake and making a pot of chrysanthemum tea costs almost nothing and gives the afternoon a shape. Not "we are going to have a talk today", but "I brought cake".
The first is a demand. The second is an excuse. The second works far better.
The meal at the bottom
After the grave and after the walk, the family usually goes to eat. Everyone is there, everyone is sitting, and nobody is rushing off.
That meal is the best chance of the year, and it goes by unused every time.
Questions for the walk up
"What did grandfather actually do for a living?"
"How old were you the first time you came up here? Who brought you?"
"Have you walked this hill before? Who with?"
"When your mother swept the grave, was there anything she always insisted on?"
You do not need all of them. Two hours of walking, one question, and listening to the whole answer is already enough.
Let's talk. No decision needed today.
