Chung Yeung: We Take the Best Care of the One With No Voice Left
You go up the hill for that one every year. When did you last ask the one standing next to you?
The Chung Yeung Festival falls on Sunday 18 October in 2026. Because it lands on a Sunday, the public holiday moves to Monday 19 October.
Grave-sweeping at Chung Yeung is one of the very few things a Hong Kong family does every single year without anyone forgetting. The offerings are bought, the family goes up, the grave is cleaned, respects are paid, and afterwards everyone goes down for a meal.
We are more disciplined about the dead than about the living
Sit with that for a second and it is genuinely strange. For someone who died twenty years ago, we give up a day every year to look after their stone, and in twenty years we have not missed once.
And the aunt in her eighties standing next to you on that same hill, who knew the person under that stone while they were alive and knows things you will never otherwise learn, when did you last sit down and ask her anything?
This is not anyone's fault. Grave-sweeping has a date, a ritual, and people who remind you. Asking a question has none of those.
For the one on the hill it is already too late
The stone carries a name and two dates. Everything else is inside the heads of the people still standing next to it.
What trade they worked in when they were young. How they got from the village to Hong Kong. What frightened them. What they sounded like laughing.
None of it is written down anywhere, and nobody is planning to write it. And every year that passes, there is one fewer person who can still tell you.
The meal afterwards
After the hill, the family usually goes for a meal. Everyone is there, everyone is sitting down, and nobody is in a hurry to leave.
That meal is the single best opportunity of the year, and it goes by unused every time.
It does not have to be an interview. One question is the whole thing. "What did grandfather actually do for a living?" "What was the place you all lived in like?" "What kind of man was he?"
The oldest person at the table will answer. And while they are answering, you are doing the thing that going up the hill this morning was supposed to mean.
What Chung Yeung is actually about
Chung Yeung is a festival about remembering. We have only ever read it as being about the dead.
But remembering is a thing you can only do while someone can still speak. A grave can be swept for a hundred years. A voice cannot.
Before you go up this year, work out who you want to ask, and what. One question is enough.
Let's talk. No decision needed today.
