AI Voice Cloning for the Dead: Where Is the Moral Line?

This is not a hypothetical. Services that do this already exist.

There are now services that take a few seconds of someone's voice and use it to generate a convincing AI clone, one that can then read out any text you type.

If the person is still alive, that is arguably convenient, even fun. If the person has died, it is a different question entirely.

Our position, stated plainly

We will not build this, and we will not do it for anyone. Not because the technology is out of reach, but because it is a fundamentally different thing from what we actually do.

The line is not "does it sound like her". It is "did she ever say it"

Cloning someone's voice and then typing words for it to read means putting words in their mouth that they never said. Who chooses those words? A family member, maybe, or a company's algorithm. The one person who has no say in it is the actual owner of that voice.

While she was alive, she could tell you exactly which words she would say and which she never would. Once she is gone, nobody can answer that question on her behalf, and yet the captions keep getting typed and the voice keeps reading them out, with no way to verify, no way to object, no way for her to say "I never said that".

This is the actual source of the unease

It is not just that the voice sounds uncannily real. It is that a person who can no longer consent, and can no longer object, still has their voice made to say whatever someone else decides. That is the real reason so many people find this deeply unsettling, not just strange.

And there is a second issue: respecting the dead themselves

Funerals, anniversaries, the rituals mourning takes in almost every culture, are not really performed for the person who died. They exist to help the living accept, step by step, that someone is truly gone. There is a word for that process: grieving.

An AI clone that is available on demand, that can always "talk" again, can work against exactly that. Instead of helping you accept that she is gone, it can help you keep treating her as though she is still here. That is not preserving a memory. It is avoiding a goodbye, and it can hold you in place rather than let you move forward.

There is also a more basic question underneath it. Did this person ever agree to have their voice keep "talking" to people after they died? While she is alive, you can ask her what she wants to leave behind for her family. You cannot ask her whether she wants to keep having conversations after she is gone.

What we do runs in the opposite direction

We do not generate voices, and we do not extend a conversation that has already had its last word. We preserve what a living, conscious person actually agreed to say, in their own words.

Every QR code you scan in one of our books plays a line she chose herself, said herself, recorded while she was still here and still able to say yes or no to it. Not one word was added afterward. Not one word is a guess at what she might have said.

This is the line we will not cross

This is not just a company policy. It is the actual reason the work exists: what gets kept is her own voice, not a voice someone else decided on for her.

Memories fade. Their voice doesn't. But it has to actually be theirs.

Let's talk. No decision needed today.
