How Did Your Grandmother Actually Get to Hong Kong?
Nearly every Hong Kong family begins with one journey. Almost nobody knows the details.
If someone asked you when your family arrived in Hong Kong, how much could you actually tell them?
Most people can produce one line: my grandparents came down from the village. Push a little further, which village, how old were they, how did they travel, who with, and it stops.
That gap is not a failure of devotion. Nobody ever told you, and they never thought it was worth telling.
To them it was not history, it was making a living
People who came to Hong Kong in the fifties and sixties largely did not think they were doing anything worth recording. In their own account they were just working, just getting through it.
So if you ask how they came to Hong Kong you will often get a shrug and "that's just how it was," and nothing after it. That is not a refusal. They genuinely do not see the story in it.
Ask it differently and the whole thing opens. What did you carry with you the day you left? Where did you sleep your first night in Hong Kong? Who got you your first job?
"However hard it is once we get to Hong Kong, at least we won't starve."
A flat, undramatic sentence. But nobody says "at least we won't starve" unless they have already seen what starving looks like.
These details exist nowhere else
Museums have the big events: the squatter areas, the resettlement blocks, the factories of the seventies. Museums do not have your grandmother.
The history of a city is assembled out of a few million private versions of how I got here. Almost none of those versions were ever written down, because nobody believed their own was important.
Your grandmother's version exists in exactly one place. When she goes, it is gone, and there is no archive anywhere that can give it back.
There is still time, but the window is real
The generation that came down from the villages is now in its eighties and nineties. Their memory of that period is often sharper than their memory of last week.
You don't have to do it all at once. One question a week, recorded in her voice, and in a year you will hold something that exists in no other family: how yours got here, told by the person it happened to.
Let's talk. No decision needed today.
