Before You Emigrate, Some Things Cannot Be Shipped
You can send a container. You cannot send the sound of your grandmother talking in her kitchen.
A great many Hong Kong families are now split: children in Britain, Canada or Australia, parents still here.
The months before leaving are frantic. Selling the flat, insurance, movers, schools, the dog, company paperwork. The list is long, and it almost never contains a line that says record my parents.
What breaks first is not contact
WhatsApp means families talk daily across any distance. What goes missing is not contact, it is content.
On a call across the world you talk about the immediate: have you eaten, how is your health, how is school, when are you coming back. Nobody uses an international call to describe what their village looked like in 1962.
So you speak every day for five years and understand your parent's life exactly as well as you did at the start.
And a more concrete problem: the children
A child growing up abroad sees their grandmother once a year, usually somewhere they find loud and hot, across a language gap.
To them she is an elderly person inside a phone. They will never learn what she did as a young woman, because nobody has room for it inside a ten-day visit.
"No matter where you end up, your roots are in that fishing village."
Said by a mother to children already spread across three countries. She only needed to say it once, because she knew it was being recorded.
The thing worth doing before you go
If you are leaving this year, or someone in your family is, add one line to the list: record your parents before you go.
It does not take a day. Pull up a chair, open the voice recorder, ask ten questions, and let each answer finish before the next one. Even an hour gives you something the airline cannot break.
And if you have already gone, this works too: send one question a week to Hong Kong and let them answer by voice note. It often works better, because someone talking alone at home says far more than someone talking at you.
Things can be rebought. Flats can be rerented. This is the one item with no second chance.
Let's talk. No decision needed today.
