Where to Take the Family at Mid-Autumn, Starting With a 140-Year-Old Fire Dragon

The Tai Hang fire dragon, the lantern carnival, the mooncake club, the lanterns. And the question that goes with each one.

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on Friday 25 September in 2026. The following day, Saturday 26 September, is a public holiday, so this year it lands in a three-day weekend.

The Tai Hang fire dragon, 24 to 26 September

According to the Intangible Cultural Heritage Office, the Tai Hang fire dragon dance is performed on the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth nights of the eighth lunar month, which in 2026 are 24, 25 and 26 September. It was inscribed in 2011 on the third batch of the national list of representative intangible cultural heritage items.

The origin runs like this. In 1880, by tradition, a plague struck Tai Hang. The villagers built a dragon, covered it in burning incense sticks, and paraded it around the village around Mid-Autumn with firecrackers going off along the route. The plague stopped.

That story is worth telling a child properly, because it is not a story invented to justify a performance. It is something a village actually did during an epidemic, and having done it once they have done it every year since, for a hundred and forty-odd years.

It happens around Tai Hang in Causeway Bay, and Wun Sha Street is the place to stand. It is extremely crowded. Go early.

The Victoria Park lantern carnival, a short walk away

Tai Hang and Victoria Park are close enough to do both in one evening: walk the lantern carnival first, then go over to Tai Hang for the dragon.

The carnival is the easy half, nothing to chase and nowhere to push, so an older relative can sit and a child can run. The dragon is the half they remember for life. Together they give you one evening with both a slow part and a loud part.

The mooncake club, a thing nobody does any more

Younger people have mostly never heard of this. Anyone old in your family will remember it immediately.

Mooncakes did not use to be something you bought in one go. You paid for them across the year, a few dollars a month handed over at the bakery, and at Mid-Autumn you collected the box. It was called a mooncake club.

In an era when a box of mooncakes was real money, the club was the only way a lot of families could afford one at all. And which bakery you paid into is the kind of detail people remember for fifty years.

Which makes this the single best question of the season. "Did your family pay into a mooncake club? Which bakery?"

They will answer straight away, because they remember the name of the shop, and often the street it stood on.

Lanterns

Lanterns now are plastic, battery-lit, and play music. You can drop one and nothing happens.

They used to be split bamboo and coloured cellophane with a candle inside. Walk too fast and it caught. Once it caught, that was your Mid-Autumn.

"What kind of lantern did you have? Did you ever set one on fire?"

Looking at the moon, which does not require going far

You do not need a hilltop. An estate podium, the waterfront, a park, a basketball court all work. The point is not the view, it is that everybody sits still for twenty minutes.

Bring something to eat, bring a stool, bring your phone and then put it down.

Once you are there, ask one thing

Every activity in this piece is an excuse for a question. The dragon: how many times have you seen it. The lanterns: what did yours look like. The mooncakes: which bakery. The moon: where did you spend Mid-Autumn as a child.

You do not need to ask all of them. One a night is already more than the last ten years put together.
